CAT4

The Future Landscape of Compliance Testing

We wanted to take the opportunity to check-in with our farming partners to hopefully provide some context and clarity to recent industry chatter related to compliance testing and the newly defined CAT 4 panel. Also known as the "Expanded Panel" or "Pesticide Screen Plus," CAT4 introduces 127 additional pesticides, previously screened in other states, into California's cannabis testing ecosystem.

Rest assured we are here to help our partners navigate these uncharted waters.

What's all the chatter about?

A June article in the LA TIMES entitled The Dirty Secret of California’s Legal Weed documented that some of the products being sold at the retail level had failed testing after they were purchased and retested.

The secondary takeaway, and the reason for this memo, is that there are products (generally termed pesticides, but include insecticides, fungicides, and herbicides) that are not included in the current California compliance testing standard.

By the Numbers

California's current compliance testing standard tests for 66 pesticides.
Colorado’s current compliance testing standard tests for an additional 127.

Impact - What LEEF is Seeing

California’s testing labs are now offering the expanded testing panel for those additional 127 pesticides.

  1. The market is asking for products that test clean from those additional 127 pesticides;

  2. From the expanded panel the most common pesticide that is being found in California cannabis is PYMETROZINE, the active ingredient in the brands ENDEAVOR, FULFILL, DEVENIR & TEMPO.

Potential for New California Testing Regulations

The DCC has yet to articulate its stance on the expanded testing panel; we don’t know if this will become the new standard, but there is enough concern around the subject that consideration should be given to it.

SUCCESS in Uncertainty

Proactively embracing the potentially new testing standards will help ensure that products grown on your farm will be fully compliant. It also has the potential to differentiate your products at the consumer safety level which should drive incremental value on the products that your farm offers.
